Although most of landward Solis is protected by the natural walls of the Screaming Cliffs, the Schisms have, over many years, augmented these defences. The original walls were small affairs and simply filled gaps and gulleys to ensure folk entered and left Solis through the officially sanctioned Toll Gates. Back then, commerce was the driving force and life-blood of solis. A few of these walls can still be seen if a cur knows where to look, melded into the new and the more magnificent walls. The East Walls where the river-shore mires meet the bedrock of the city were originally wooden pallisade with a large Toll Gate House built of stone and timber. In the years after the First Occlusion The Ruling Schism instructed the Articifer Tarmis to replace the pallisades with walls of stone that would withstand a considerable force of men if ever Solis was to be threatened again. So adept was teh Great Tarmis that his walls stand to this day, high and invincible as ever. These are the man made cliffs a landbourne traveller first sees as he approaches Solis along the Dal Road from the Hinterlands to the East. Though, of course, few do these days.
